The decade after 1815 was a period of cultural instability, in
which literature was redefined in response to a mass readership.
Magazines were a product of and response to a culture that was
metropolitan in size and heterogeneity. This book analyses a
literary genre that made creative use of a cultural confusion which
elsewhere provoked anxiety.
Dozens of lively international case studies that help readers put
core marketing principles in a real-world context
From market research to positioning and brand management to
customer relations, marketing is the engine that drives innovation
and growth in the modern business organization. This latest
addition to the acclaimed Pathfinder series, like its popular
predecessor, "The Strategy Pathfinder," features a unique blend of
core concepts and brief, international case studies. A refreshing
contrast to traditional marketing texts and references, which tend
to be prescriptive and directive, "The Marketing Pathfinder" offers
professionals and marketing students alike an effective way to
contextualize the marketing decisions they'll make in the real
world of business. Not another one-size-fits-all marketing toolkit,
"The Marketing Pathfinder" functions as a dynamic, interactive
resourceEach chapter presents a set of core concepts, frameworks,
and tools, followed by five or more short, lively international
case studies illustrating how the concepts and tools can be applied
in the real worldThe case studies are specifically designed to
encourage readers to pursue additional independent research and to
encourage them to articulate and defend their decisionsThroughout,
the emphasis is on the reader as a marketing professional in the
thick of it and responsible for the decisions they make

The Urban Heat Island (UHI) is an area of growing interest for many
people studying the urban environment and local/global climate
change. The UHI has been scientifically studied for 200 years and,
although it is an apparently simple phenomenon, there is
considerable confusion around the different types of UHI and their
assessment. The Urban Heat Island-A Guidebook provides simple
instructions for measuring and analysing the phenomenon, as well as
greater context for defining the UHI and the impacts it can have.
Readers will be empowered to work within a set of guidelines that
enable direct comparison of UHI effects across diverse settings,
while informing a wide range of climate mitigation and adaptation
programs to modify human behaviour and the built form. This opens
the door to true global assessments of local climate change in
cities. Urban planning and design strategies can then be evaluated
for their effectiveness at mitigating these changes.
This volume covers the early development of mobile coronary care
within the context of major societal and scientific changes,
leading to pre-hospital emergency intensive care, cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation. The success of the Belfast
Cardiac Ambulance stimulated the development of broader
pre-hospital emergency services and the concomitant growth of
related expertise and paramedical personnel. This book celebrates
the origins and early development of out-of-hospital resuscitative
care. There is much to celebrate: Resuscitation, particularly from
ventricular fibrillation, is commonplace. The science of
resuscitation is well defined. Effective training programmes for
basic and advanced skills are in place. Public training in CPR and
use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are widespread.
As author of the "Wilderness Letter" and major award-winning
novels, histories, essays, and biographies, Wallace Stegner worked
throughout his life to protect western lands, places, and peoples.
His writing was and remains an inspiration and guide for countless
people attempting to cultivate a sense of place in the American
West while tacking their way through uncertain times. This book
tells the story of Stegner and his family as they made a home just
outside of Palo Alto, California, dur ing its transition from the
Valley of Heart's Delight (known for its rolling hills and
orchards) to Silicon Valley. In this thoughtful study of the novels
Stegner wrote in Califor nia-including his Pulitzer Prize-winning
Angle of Repose-readers are invited to consider with Stegner what
the practice of place requires in the American West. Specialists in
the literature and history of the American West will find new
analyses of Stegner and his influential work. Other readers will be
guided through Stegner's work in concrete and accessible prose, and
anyone who has longed for home and a sense of place will encounter
a powerful, beautiful, and at times tragic attempt to build and
preserve it.
Many educators, overwhelmed by the increasing demands of the
profession and by the effort that the move to the Common Core
Standards requires, continue to view fiction text as the primary
source for both read aloud experiences and beginning reading
instruction. This text helps all educators and prospective
educators see nonfiction texts as an important component of all
aspects of the PreK-2 curriculum and to provide them with
practical, proven tools for selection and use of a wide variety of
informational literature, including books, magazines, charts,
graphs, digital media, and more. The authors examine why a balance
of informational and narrative text is so important, and what
recent research reveals about the value of using nonfiction text
with young children. Those working most closely with children in
kindergarten through second grade classrooms will find this to be a
practical resource for understanding the Standards related to
nonfiction text, and for selecting and using appropriate
informational literature to build young children's background
knowledge and their acquisition of foundational reading skills.
Individuals responsible for professional development and for
coaching teachers' implementation of the reading curriculum should
be able to use this text in teacher book club discussion groups,
and as the base for design of professional development sessions.
